Freed hostage's claim that captors killed infant daughter, raped American wife are denied by Taliban

Freed hostage's claim that captors killed infant daughter, raped American wife are denied by Taliban
More
After being held hostage for five years by a Taliban-affiliated terrorist network in the mountains of Afghanistan, a Canadian man, his American wife and their three children born in captivity arrived in Toronto Friday night.

Joshua Boyle -- who arrived at Toronto's Pearson International Airport with his wife Caitlan Coleman and their children -- told reporters inside the Air Canada terminal that the Haqqani network killed a fourth child born in captivity, an infant daughter, and raped his wife, claims denied by the Taliban.

"The stupidity and the evil of the Haqqani networks, kidnapping of a pilgrim and his heavily pregnant wife engaged in helping ordinary villagers in Taliban-controlled regions of Afghanistan was eclipsed only by the stupidity and evil of authorizing the murder of my infant daughter, Martyr Boyle," Boyle said, revealing the murder of his daughter.

He added, about the alleged rape of his wife, "As retaliation of the repeated refusal to accept an offer that the criminal miscreants of the Haqqani had made to me. And the stupidity and evil of the subsequent rape of my wife, not as the lone action of one guard, but assisted by the captain of the guards and the commandant."

Speaking about the couple's children, Boyle said, "Obviously it would be of incredible importance to my family that we are able to build a secure sanctuary for our 3 surviving children to call a home, to focus on edification," Boyle told reporters. "And to try to regain of the childhood that they had lost."

he Taliban in a statement on Sunday denied Boyle's claims. It said the couple's infant child died from natural causes due to lack of access to a doctor and medical facilities before her birth. The statement further disputed Boyle's allegation that his wife was raped, saying that the family members had not been separated for even a minute after their capture.

The Government of Canada issued the following statement on the arrival of Joshua Boyle, his wife Caitlan Coleman and their children at Toronto's Pearson International Airport: "Today, we join the Boyle family in rejoicing over the long-awaited return to Canada of their loved ones. Canada has been actively engaged on Mr. Boyle’s case at all levels, and we will continue to support him and his family now that they have returned."

The couple and their children were rescued in a dramatic operation orchestrated by the U.S. and Pakistani governments, officials said Thursday.

The couple were abducted in October 2012 while in Afghanistan as part of a brief backpacking trip and held by the Haqqani network, which has ties to the Taliban and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. government. Coleman was pregnant at the time.

The operation came after years of U.S. pressure on Pakistan for assistance. It unfolded quickly and included what some described as a shootout and a dangerous raid.

Thousands respond 'me too' to actress's Twitter prompt on sexual abuse

Actress Alyssa Milano has sparked a massive outpouring with a simple Twitter request that women respond "me too" if they've been sexually assaulted or harassed.

More than 27,000 people replied, making "#MeToo" the top trending topic through the day Sunday.

The avalanche of painful personal stories comes amid a series of high profile sex abuse scandals -- the latest one centered around powerful Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

The intensity and breadth of the response highlighted that the problem reaches well beyond the rich and famous and features in the everyday lives of women around the world.

"If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write 'me too' as a reply to this tweet," Milano wrote.

Many women appeared to be speaking out for the first time about abuses they had suffered, and said they had to overcome feelings of shame and embarrassment to do so.

Some just responded "#MeToo."

- Broken trust -

Others said they had been abused as children by relatives, or as a teenager by a person they trusted. That nobody believed them when they spoke about it emerged as a common refrain.

"I wish I could remember who I was before #MeToo," wrote a woman named Rosey.

"Molested by a family member. Raped as a kid and an adult. Became a drug addict and then overcame. Don't ever give up. I'm here#MeToo," said Amy Christensen in her post.

"Sexual assaulted by a military doctor at Lackland AFB. 1973," said DebiDay.

"Me, too. I spoke out. What did I learn. That no one, absolutely no one, would listen, much less help," said Lisa Omlid.

"If you are not at the point where you can share your #MeToo I stand with you," said Kelly Douglas. "Your story is valid whether you share it or not."

There were many sympathetic responses from men.

Vinay Ramesh encouraged "all my fellow men to learn about #MeToo. The responsibility to stop sexual violence is absolutely on us."

"I feel disgusted and sad," said Ed Krassenstein.

- Scandals -

Although the overwhelming majority of the posts were personal in nature, the Weinstein scandal and US President Donald Trump's videotaped boasts of groping women with impunity also drew comments.

"Just as I did after the #Trump tapes, I'm having flashbacks due to the Harvey Weinstein assault & rape allegations. Abuse is forever," wrote BuffieHippie.

More than 20 women -- a who's who of Hollywood -- have come forward to accuse Weinstein of rape, assault and sexual harassment.

Milano, probably best known for her role in the 1980s sitcom "Who's the Boss," is not among the accusers.

Weinstein, who insists any sexual encounters were consensual, was expelled this week from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

A court document made public on Sunday revealed that Trump's campaign has been subpoenaed for all documents related to assault allegations that emerged during his run for the presidency.

President Donald Trump wants to resolve the confrontation with North Korea through diplomacy

North Korea crisis: Tillerson says diplomacy will continue

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has insisted President Donald Trump wants to resolve the confrontation with North Korea through diplomacy.
It will continue until "the first bomb drops", he told CNN.
Sanctions and diplomacy, he said, had brought unprecedented international unity against North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.
Last month, Mr Trump told Mr Tillerson not to waste time seeking talks with Kim Jong-un.
Mr Tillerson's remarks come as the US and South Korea begin their latest joint military exercise in waters surrounding the Korean peninsula, involving fighter jets, destroyers and aircraft carriers.
The drills regularly anger the North, and Pyongyang has in the past denounced them as a "rehearsal for war".

In Sunday's interview, Mr Tillerson again refused to comment on whether he had referred to Mr Trump as a moron after a July meeting at the Pentagon.
"I'm not going to deal with that petty stuff," he replied, saying he would not dignify the question with an answer.
The president responded by challenging the secretary of state to an IQ test but a spokeswoman said later it had been a joke.

Lines of communication

In recent months, North Korea has defied international opinion by conducting its sixth nuclear test and launching two missiles over Japan.
Analysts say the secretive communist state it is clearly set on developing a nuclear-capable missile, able to threaten the continental US, despite UN sanctions.
At the end of last month, Mr Tillerson disclosed that the US was in "direct contact" with the North and looking at the possibility of talks.
After months of heated rhetoric, it came as a surprise to some that the two countries had lines of communication.
However, the next day Mr Trump tweeted Mr Tillerson to say: "Save your energy Rex, we'll do what has to be done!"

Europe backs Iran deal, Saudis hail Trump's move

Political leaders around the world have weighed in on US President Donald Trump's decision to decertify the nuclear deal with Iran.
Officials in the US and Europe, as well as in the Middle East, have both praised and criticised the president's strategy on the international nuclear agreement.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani responded shortly after Mr Trump spoke.
"Today the United States is more than ever opposed to the nuclear deal and more than ever against the Iranian people," he said.

Trump vows not to sign off

In a written statement, the Islamic Republican of Iran proclaimed Mr Trump's action "proves once again that the United States is not a reliable negotiating partner".
The president's announcement now leaves it up to Congress to decide upon new sanctions to impose on Iran.

Europe

The European Union's Federica Mogherini said the current deal is "working and delivering", adding that the rest of the world would work to preserve the agreement.
The foreign affairs policy-maker also criticised Mr Trump's unilateral action, contending the deal is not a domestic issue and is not in the hands of any one president to terminate.

British Prime Minister Theresa May released a joint statement with France's Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Angela Merkel, saying they are "concerned by the possible implications".
"We stand committed to the [deal] and its full implementation by all sides", they wrote, adding that it "is in our shared national security interest".
"We look to Iran to engage in constructive dialogue to stop de-stabilising actions and work towards negotiated solutions," the statement said.
Mr Macron also said the latest developments "will not put an end to the Iranian nuclear accord, and that together all the parties in France and its European partners will continue to meet their commitments".
He added that he was considering visiting Tehran after speaking by phone with President Rouhani.

Russia

In a statement, the Russian foreign ministry stressed on the "inadmissibility of using aggressive and threatening rhetoric in international relations", saying Moscow "remains committed" to the deal.
The statement added that "there can be no question of any resumption of sanctions by the UN Security Council".
United States
Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, quickly slammed Mr Trump's decision "to throw this hand grenade in the lap of Congress".
"He doesn't have to blow up this deal this way," he said.
Democratic lawmaker Adam Schiff described the White House strategy as "alienating our allies... all part of the new Trump doctrine: Lead from Behind".
Rhode Island Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse said Mr Trump is "casting aside concern for the safety of the American people and our allies just to erase a victory for his predecessor".
"That is not putting America first," he added.
In a joint statement released by the Congressional Homeland Security Committee, several Republicans cheered Mr Trump and pledged to work with him to "hold Iran strictly accountable to its commitments, and support efforts to counter all the Iranian threats".

North Korea allies dry up: Malaysia halts ALL funding to Kim-Jong-Un in World War 3 threat

North Korea allies dry up: Malaysia halts ALL funding to Kim-Jong-Un in World War 3 threat
MALAYSIA, which until recently had been one of Pyongyang's closest allies has halted all imports from North Korea.

Malaysia is attempting to cut the flow of money to the country, as part of global efforts to cut off funding for its nuclear and missile programmes.

Malaysia did not buy any goods from North Korea in June and July, after buying 20.6 million ringgit ($4.89 million) worth of goods in the first five months of the year, according to data from the Department of Statistics.

Malaysia's ties with North Korea have deteriorated since the February assassination of Kim Jong Un's estranged half brother at Kuala Lumpur international airport, which the United States and South Korea say was ordered by the North Korean leader.

Kuala Lumpur last month banned its citizens from travelling to North Korea, two weeks after Prime Minister Najib Razak met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

The visit gave Najib a political boost at home, with his popularity suffering over a massive scandal at a state investment fund, which the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating.
Trump told reporters after meeting with Najib at the White House last month that Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak "does not do business with North Korea any longer, and we find that to be very important."

Malaysia had been a key source of revenue for the North. Citizens from both countries enjoyed visa-free travel. Malaysia was host to hundreds of overseas workers. More importantly were operations that funnelled money to the regime. Reuters reported earlier this year North Korea's spy agency, the Reconnaissance Bureau, was running an arms operation out of Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia's halt to North Korean imports came ahead of drastic U.N. and U.S. sanctions last month that ramp up export bans and penalise companies and individuals doing business with North Korea.

The United Nations on Sept. 11 banned North Korea's lucrative textile exports as well as all joint ventures with North Koran individuals or entities.

Trump issued an executive order 10 days later penalising any company or person doing business with North Korea by cutting off their access to the U.S. financial system, freezing their assets or both.

Other Southeast Asian nations have similarly reduced imports from North Korea. The Philippines said last month it has suspended trade with North Korea to comply with sanctions.

Thailand's imports from North Korea dropped to $400,000 between January and August, compared with $1.8 million in the same period last year, according to data from the commerce ministry.

Indonesia, on the other hand, increased its imports from North Korea to $1.8 million in January-July before the latest round of sanctions, versus $910,000 in the same period last year.

Secretary of state Rex Tillerson, on a swing through Southeast Asia in August, urged countries to do more to cut funding streams for North Korea.

For instance, North Korean front companies were using Bangkok as a regional hub, changing their names frequently, Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Susan Thornton told reporters during Tillerson's visit to Bangkok in early August.

Malaysia's past imports from North Korea ranged from big ticket items such as coal, medical devices and light emitting diodes to even crabs, noodles, cloth hangers and fire extinguishers.

A U.S. government official said Malaysia has assured the United States it does not import from Pyongyang anymore.

Malaysia's trade ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Malaysia had been one of the few countries increasing its imports from North Korea in recent years - from a mere 1,183 ringgit ($311) in 2012 to 8.2 million ringgit in 2016.

An unusual purchase this year was coal, which Malaysia bought right after China, the top buyer of the North's minerals banned imports of the commodity in February. A U.N. report in September said North Korea had diversified its coal exports to other countries after the China ban.

Malaysia bought $3.4 million worth of coal in March and $16.6 million worth of coal tar products, data showed. The March purchase was the first time Malaysia had bought coal from North Korea since at least 2012.

While imports have stopped, Malaysia has continued exports to North Korea. Exports included palm oil, food and medical supplies worth 4.4 million ringgit between January and July.

BREAKING: Comelec chair Andres Bautista resigns

BREAKING: Comelec chair Andres Bautista resigns

“It is with my deep sadness that I am informing you about my decision to resign as the chair of the Commission on Elections by the end of the year,” Bautista said in an open letter posted on his social media accounts.

It was addressed to his “Comelec family.”

“After much prayer and discernment, I believe that this is the right time to step down given the postponement of the Barangay and SK elections.”
“This was not an easy decision, but my family, especially my children, need me now more than ever,” he said.

Bautista’s resignation came less than a month after the House of Representatives junked an impeachment complaint against him over his alleged unexplained wealth.

His wife, Patricia, claimed that he might have amassed nearly P1 billion in ill-gotten wealth. The Comelec chief has repeatedly denied the allegation.

In the letter, Bautista thanked his Comelec family for the love, prayers and support that they showed him “most especially during my most challenging times.”
“Amid the hurtful, baseless and malicious accusations hurled against me, most of you never left my side,” he said.

House votes to impeach Comelec Chairman Bautista

House votes to impeach Comelec Chairman Bautista

MANILA, Philippines— The House of Representatives has overturned the decision of its justice committee by voting to impeach Commission on Elections Chairman Andres Bautista, who earlier in the day announced his decision to step down from his post at the end of this year.
During the plenary debates on the complaint, 137 representatives voted to reject the committee resolution that dismissed the impeachment charge against the poll chief while 75 House members voted to adopt it. Two representatives abstained during the voting.
"The vote shows that the resolution is overridden and pursuant to Section 11, Article 3 of the Rules of Procedure in Impeachment Proceedings a vote of at least one-third of all the members of the House shall be necessary to override such resolution. I am directing the Committee on Justice to prepare the articles of impeachment immediately," Deputy Speaker Raneo Abu (Batangas) said after receiving the results of the voting.
The House Committee on Justice earlier junked the impeachment case filed by lawyer Ferdinand Topacio and former Negros Occidental Rep. Jacinto "Jing" Paras for insufficiency in form.
The House has the power to overturn the committee decision should one-third of its members vote to do so.
The vote of the House paves the way for the justice committee to prepare the articles of impeachment, which will be sent to the Senate for an impeachment trial.

Rep. Edcel Lagman (Albay), however, dismissed the notion that the articles of impeachment should now be formulated after the plenary vote.
"Only form was discussed and voted upon this afternoon. The plenary should return to the committee on justice for further proceedings the complaint against Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista," he said.
Reps. Gwendolyn Garcia (Cebu) and Robert Ace Barbers (Surigao Del Norte) objected to the motion of House Justice Committee Chairman Reynaldo Umali (Oriental Mindoro) for the plenary to approve House Resolution 1397 dismissing the Paras-Topacio case.
According to Garcia and Barbers, the case should proceed as they believe that the charges against the Comelec chairman should be heard at the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.
The two added that an impeachment trial would give Bautista an opportunity to present his side and defend himself from the allegations in the charge.
"It is perceived that there was (sic) some infractions that was (sic) committed by no less than the chairman of the commission. We never heard any reply to the allegations being hurled at him," Barbers said during the plenary deliberations.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez (Davao Del Norte) also voted to reject the committee resolution and said that the charges against Bautista were serious.
According to Umali, his committee dismissed the complaint since it did not conform to the verification required by the rules of the House.
He added that no authentic records were attached to the complaint to support the charges it contained.
"The verification stated that the complainants had personal knowledge and/or belief of the allegations contained therein which is not consistent with what the rules require that it must be based on authentic records," Umali explained.
Lagman, who voted to affirm the resolution, said after the vote that the plenary should have supported the decision of the justice panel.
He said that the decision to override the panel resolution was a "no-confidence" vote on Umali and the leadership of the committee.
"I think we should have supported the integrity of our committee system," he said, adding that the dismissal of the complaint has precedent.
The allegations in the Paras-Topacio complaint were based on the accusations of Bautista's estranged wife, Patricia, that the poll chief had wealth not reflected in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.
He also betrayed public trust when he failed to adopt safeguards that could have prevented the data breach or hacking of the Comelec's website, the two alleged.
Paras and Topacio said the failure of Bautista to "promptly act" on the hacking of the Comelec website constituted betrayal of public trust.
Another ground for impeachment was obstruction of justice when the Comelec chairman cleared the personnel of the poll body's technology provider, Smartmatic, and the IT specialists of the electoral agency of any wrongdoing after they tweaked the script of a program during the canvassing of the results of the May 2016 elections.
